Basic of breeding

When you reach Solaceon Town in Diamond/Pearl,there is a Pokemon Day Care Center.There,the old lady will watch your pokemon,and they will gain levels.If you want to breed,you must have (obviously) a male and a female pokemon. First,they must be in the same egg group.Here is a list of the egg groups:

Monster
Dragon
Ground
Bug
Plant
Water A
Water B
Water C
Interdeterminate
Fairy
Humanshape
Mineral
No Egg

The No Egg group consists of all genderless pokemon,such as baby forms of some pokemon,and Latias and Latios.If you want more than one,you have to use Ditto.

After you have recieved a mysterious egg from the daycare man,you wonder, when will it hatch?Leaving your DS on won't work,you have to walk to get it hatched.Sometimes you only have to walk 1,000,but sometimes it takes a rough 10,000 steps.A good way to take steps is by putting your bike in the mode that doesn't go up slopes.Then put a weight on the up arrow,and wait until your egg hatches.

You hatched your Aipom just recently,and decide to check its move set.It has Scratch,Tail Whip,and Counter.Counter?Aipom can't learn Counter.That is an Egg Move.Cetain pokemon have egg moves,moves that can only be learned by eggs.This happens when the parent has an egg move of the to be hatched pokemon,it is passed on,like hierarchy.The same thing for TMs.If the father knows a TM that the egg's pokemon can learn,the hatched pokemon will know it.

Perhaps I wanted to breed for a Sentret with Slash.I would take a Female Sentret,and a male Zangoose with Slash.They are both in the Field Egg Group,so they can breed together.The Sentret Egg will now end up with Scratch,Foresight,and Slash.

Here's a example of compatible pokemon in each group:

Koffing and Duskull(amorphus)

Burmy and Ninjask(bug)

Bagon and Gible(dragon)

Oddish and Tangrowth(grass)

Snubbull and Clefairy(fairy)

Spoink and Purugly(field)

Zubat and Skarmory(flying)

Abra and Mr.Mime(human-shape)

Bronzor and Nosepass(mineral)

Snorlax and Sheildon(monster)

Psyduck and Shellos(Water 1)

Luvdisc and Magikarp(Water 2)

Tentacool and Lileep(Water 3)

Ditto(Ditto)

Raikou(no eggs)

If in different egg groups...

The Pokémon will not make an egg.
The old man in the Daycare will say: "The two prefer to play with other POKéMON than each other."


Note:There is also pokemon that can only be earned through breeding:Tyrogue,Wynaut,Azurill,Igglybuff,Magby,Elekid,and Pichu.

To get these pokemon:

Azurill: A male Marrill/Azumarill must be holding a Sea Incencse when breeding.

Pichu: Just breed a Pikachu.

Wynaut: A male Wobbuffet must be holding a Lax Incense when breeding.

Igglybuff: Just breed a Wigglytuff/Jigglypuff.

Tyrouge: Just breed a Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee/Hitmontop

Elekid: Just breed an Electabuzz/Electrive.

Magby: Just breed a Magmortar/Magmar.

Bonsly: Just breed a Sudowuddo with Rock Insence

Mr.Mime: Breed Mr.Mime with ditto

Munchlax: Breed Snorlax with Ditto.
